Memorial Day is meant to honor and remember those who lost their lives while serving in the U.S. military. And while it is a somber occasion, for most of us it also comes with a nice 3-day weekend. Don’t know how to spend that extra time? Here are a few ideas to spruce up your long weekend a bit.
Decorate with Festive Red, White, and Blue
Not all your holiday décor has to be purchased and tossed out right after the occasion ends. There are a bunch of simple and easy DIY decorations you can make this Memorial Day. One idea is to use a glass vase with some red roses for an elegant centerpiece. Click HERE to find a vase from Crate and Barrel that you can easily jazz up with a blue bow if you want to include all three patriotic colors! Also, don’t forget if you have an American flag flying out front, it should be raised half-staff from sunrise to noon and then brought up to full-staff until sunset.
Enjoy some Classic American Summer Foods
Nothing is better than hosting a chill summer BBQ in the backyard and inviting the neighbors, family, and friends to enjoy it along with you. Memorial Day is the perfect excuse to throw a backyard party but don’t forget to put out some delicious food. Whenever I think of backyard cookouts it MUST include hotdogs, hamburgers, and of course, sweet tea. Target is always my favorite place to get all the BBQ necessities like paper cups, plates, and napkins. Here’s even a cute picture spinning American class food into dessert!
Attend a Local Memorial Day Event
Sometimes it’s great to just sit at home and be lazy but that can also get boring. If you’re a local Richmond resident, there are a ton of great events and activities going on all throughout Memorial Day weekend. My favorite is always the Sandston Memorial Day Parade and Festivities. You can find a schedule of their events starting on Friday all the way through Monday right HERE. Another fun event is the fireworks over Belle Isle. Below is a picture from last years show!
As this Memorial Day approaches, don’t forget to thank your local veterans and show your support for all the service they’ve done. Although there are many fun festivities to celebrate, remember the true reason for this holiday to applaud the men and women who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom.
